Ushering at Magic Theatre

Magic Theatre has a large group of dedicated volunteers that work with us each season which we value as an important part of our theatre family. There are ushering opportunities available for every show of our current and upcoming productions!

Ushers are required to arrive at the theatre one hour before curtain and must be dressed in all black. Duties may include:

• stuffing programs

• tearing tickets

• assisting patrons to their seats

• assisting with operating concessions or merchandise counters

• light clean-up of the theatre after the performance

In return, ushers are able to see the show free of charge in some of the best seats in the house. They also get 50% off at Magic Theatre Concessions Lounge. The schedule can be arranged at your convenience!

To become part of our volunteer usher team and to schedule a time to work with us please contact the Magic Theatre Box Office.

Please Note: In order to usher with us you must confirm a shift on a specific date. Magic Theatre does not have a lot of room for storage of personal belongings during your ushering shift, so please come with as few personal belongings as possible (large bags, backpacks, laptops, suitcases, and grocery bags are all difficult to accommodate). Small purses are acceptable.

Did you know, that while watching a live theatre performance, audience members' heartbeats will synchronize and respond to a piece in unison?

We miss your heartbeat! We miss coming together and sharing space with you. We miss your company and the power of live theater. This is why we are asking for your help this year.

Our community needs new work and bold storytelling that critically reflects our world, like the two plays selected for this season--Monument, or Four Sisters (A Sloth Play) by Sam Chanse and The Kind Ones by Miranda Rose Hall. With your support, we will be able to fulfill our promise to our 32 artists assembled to produce these world premieres in innovative ways when we are safely permitted to do so. In the meantime we continue to develop new work and support our artists, staff and infrastructure. We will be honest--it hasn’t been easy. In order to keep our work going, your support is critical during this unprecedented time.

This December and January, we have reimagined our Virgin Play Festival in an online format. We are proud that many of the extraordinary playwrights whose work you have seen on our stages in full production and in our Virgin Play Festival have gone on to incredible success. Lloyd Suh (The Chinese Lady, Jesus in India, American Hwangap) was named the 2020 Recipient of the Horton Foote Prize and Taylor Mac (Hir, The Lily’s Revenge) is the first American awarded the International Ibsen Award (the Nobel Prize of Theater). We are dedicated to empowering such artists and finding ways to nurture new work in this unpredictable time. To continue Magic’s legacy, we will need to raise $150,000 between now and July 2021.

This pandemic may have closed our physical doors for now, but we are busy planning for the future. We have been examining our practices and policies to create greater equity in how we do our work so that when we open our doors we are ready to meet the moment. We are in the midst of a national search to find our next Artistic Director. There is so much in store for us in 2021. Yet, to get back to our theater at Fort Mason we need your help! While we have drastically reduced expenses during the pandemic, we still rely on individual contributions like yours. If you give today, not only are you supporting this 54 year-old groundbreaking institution, but also the humans behind it; Magic's family of actors, directors, designers, and staff who are struggling during this crisis.

We look forward to the day when we can breathe together and laugh together.
Join us in looking with hope and joy to 2021. Please help us get there.

With love,
Ciera Eis

Paula Vogel, David Mamet, and Sam Shepard all were new playwrights at one point. Before the Pulitzer Prizes and Obie awards, these playwrights just had their words on a page…

For 50 years Magic has given playwrights an artistic home for their vision to flourish, while also nurturing artists at all stages of their careers through Magic’s Education and Community Outreach programs.

Please consider investing in The Magic with a tax-deductible gift which directly supports the creation and development of New Work. The generous support of our community makes this journey possible!

We understand that the decision to designate a planned gift is one of the most personal commitments a one can make, and we appreciate your consideration. Whether it's a straightforward bequest, trust, annuity, or an arrangement made through your IRA, planned gifts of all sizes support the Magic's long-term fiscal stability and often provide financial benefits to you as well. Plus, you can directly support programming that is most important to you, such as bold new work, young playwrights and apprentices, or our arts and community program.

How to Arrange Planned Giving

Please contact
Gabrielle Chapple for further information on estate planning and how you can directly the impact Magic for generations to come.

Whether you’ve attended Magic as a subscriber or single-ticket purchaser, you’re familiar with the high quality of our productions. That’s the achievement of a devoted team of theatre professionals—directors, actors, and designers who enjoy working together to bring new work to the stage. Your membership will ensure that, together with our skilled artists, we keep doing such groudbreaking work.

As part of the endowment, your legacy will provide permanent resources and could:

  • Support a staged reading of a new play as it moves from page to stage, a fundamental step for a playwright, such as Mfoniso Udofia and her world premiere production IN OLD AGE.
  • Immerse a student in the Magic’s educational offerings, such as Making Magic: Arts and Community Program and the Laney College Program.

  • Aid in the prep of Teaching Assistants as they teach kids how to express themselves through playwrighting and performance.

  • Underwrite a week of rehearsal, a vital aspect of the creative process, ensuring the fullest breadth of exploration

In addition, all planned giving donors enjoy the benefits of membership in the Sam Shepard Society, which include:
  • Invitations for you and a guest to several “behind-the-scenes” events, such as Closing Night Potlucks, Playwright Salon, Tech Brunch, Industry Night, and others as they occur throughout the season.
