Ushering at Magic Theatre

Magic Theatre has a large group of dedicated volunteers that work with us each season which we value as an important part of our theatre family. There are ushering opportunities available for every show of our current and upcoming productions!

Ushers are required to arrive at the theatre one hour before curtain and must be dressed in all black. Duties may include:

• stuffing programs

• tearing tickets

• assisting patrons to their seats

• assisting with operating concessions or merchandise counters

• light clean-up of the theatre after the performance

In return, ushers are able to see the show free of charge in some of the best seats in the house. They also get 50% off at Magic Theatre Concessions Lounge. The schedule can be arranged at your convenience!

Please Note: In order to usher with us you must confirm a shift on a specific date. Magic Theatre does not have a lot of room for storage of personal belongings during your ushering shift, so please come with as few personal belongings as possible (large bags, backpacks, laptops, suitcases, and grocery bags are all difficult to accommodate). Small purses are acceptable.

We miss your heartbeat! We miss coming together and sharing space with you. We miss your company and the power of live theater. This is why we are asking for your help this year.

‍Our community needs new work and bold storytelling that critically reflects our world, like the two plays selected for this season--Monument, or Four Sisters (A Sloth Play) by Sam Chanse and The Kind Ones by Miranda Rose Hall. With your support, we will be able to fulfill our promise to our 32 artists assembled to produce these world premieres in innovative ways when we are safely permitted to do so. In the meantime we continue to develop new work and support our artists, staff and infrastructure. We will be honest--it hasn’t been easy. In order to keep our work going, your support is critical during this unprecedented time.

‍This December and January, we have reimagined our Virgin Play Festival in an online format. We are proud that many of the extraordinary playwrights whose work you have seen on our stages in full production and in our Virgin Play Festival have gone on to incredible success. Lloyd Suh (The Chinese Lady, Jesus in India, American Hwangap) was named the 2020 Recipient of the Horton Foote Prize and Taylor Mac (Hir, The Lily’s Revenge) is the first American awarded the International Ibsen Award (the Nobel Prize of Theater). We are dedicated to empowering such artists and finding ways to nurture new work in this unpredictable time. To continue Magic’s legacy, we will need to raise $150,000 between now and July 2021.

‍This pandemic may have closed our physical doors for now, but we are busy planning for the future. We have been examining our practices and policies to create greater equity in how we do our work so that when we open our doors we are ready to meet the moment. We are in the midst of a national search to find our next Artistic Director. There is so much in store for us in 2021. Yet, to get back to our theater at Fort Mason we need your help! While we have drastically reduced expenses during the pandemic, we still rely on individual contributions like yours. If you give today, not only are you supporting this 54 year-old groundbreaking institution, but also the humans behind it; Magic's family of actors, directors, designers, and staff who are struggling during this crisis.
