Magic Theatre has a large group of dedicated volunteers that work with us each season which we value as an important part of our theatre family. There are ushering opportunities available for every show of our current and upcoming productions!
Ushers are required to arrive at the theatre one hour before curtain and must be dressed in all black. Duties may include:
• stuffing programs
• tearing tickets
• assisting patrons to their seats
• assisting with operating concessions or merchandise counters
• light clean-up of the theatre after the performance
In return, ushers are able to see the show free of charge in some of the best seats in the house. They also get 50% off at Magic Theatre Concessions Lounge. The schedule can be arranged at your convenience!

Please Note: In order to usher with us you must confirm a shift on a specific date. Magic Theatre does not have a lot of room for storage of personal belongings during your ushering shift, so please come with as few personal belongings as possible (large bags, backpacks, laptops, suitcases, and grocery bags are all difficult to accommodate). Small purses are acceptable.

Your support this year is absolutely critical to Magic Theatre's survival
Magic Theatre is a critically acclaimed theater in San Francisco, who is dedicated to national new work. Our playwrights have gone on to win MacArthur Genius Awards, Emmy's, Obies, Drama Desk Awards, Guggenheim Fellowships, Lloyd Suh just received the coveted Horton Foote Prize and Taylor Mac was the first American to receive the International Ibsen Award (Nobel Prize for Theater).
Due to the pandemic and necessary restrictions on gatherings, we have been unable to open our doors to the public since March 2020. This has been a necessary adjustment, but one that has put incredible strain on our company and our artists. We were forced to close our show Don't Eat the Mangos by Ricardo Perez Gonzalez a week early, shift our annual fundraising online, and adapt our final production of the season, Escaped Alone by Caryl Churchill into a radio play. While we have shifted, we are a company that believes in giving a creative home to our playwrights and we are committed to fulfilling our promise to our artists in our 2020/2021 season. With your support, we are planning to produce Monument, or Four Sisters (A Sloth Play) by Sam Chanse and The Kind Ones by Miranda Rose Hall. We will also be reimagining our Virgin Play Festival in an online format, continuing to develop work with playwrights from across the country.
We are dedicated to empowering our artists and finding ways to foster and produce new work, but we can't do it without you! In the face of such adversity and change, with the Anti-Racism and Black Lives Matter movement, and the election on the horizon we NEED to uplift the voices of playwrights who can speak to this present moment. We NEED to support bold artists and their work, and give them the space and resources to create. If you give you become a producer today, not only are you supporting this 50 year old GROUNDBREAKING institution, but also the Magic's eco-system of actors and designers, who are struggling to survive during this crisis. You are supporting our tireless staff and the continuation of Magic Theatre as a whole. We need you. There is so much more work to do.
